Top 5 Scary Movies to Watch with the Kids

Scary Movies to Watch with the Kids

Cotton Cantina's Top 5  Staff Picks:

Growing up without DVR's and DVD's (or VCR's!) we would often wait all year for the networks to air some of these great movies. The anticipation would grow as the month of October drew to a close, and Halloween was upon us once again. Well, now you can share the fun with your kids with these awesome Halloween movies, or just watch them yourself, they're good at any age!

1. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
If you haven't seen this beloved cartoon short, it's time to set your DVR — local stations usually air it a few weeks before Halloween. Don't be like Linus and miss out on all the fun. Appropriate for all ages.

2. The Addams Family (1991)
Featuring an all-star cast (Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christina Ricci, and more), this film update of the iconic TV show met all expectations. Our favorite character: Cousin It, of course. Appropriate for kids over 13.

3. Casper (1995)
Clearly, Christine Ricci was the IT scary movie child actor of the '90s because she also stars in this ghoulishly sweet feature. Ricci plays Kathleen "Kat" Harvey, the daughter of ghost therapist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) who is recruited by the "friendly ghost" to help him and his uncles complete some unfinished business. Appropriate for all ages.

4. Ghostbusters (1988)
Who you gonna call? Well, we suggest you conjure up this action-packed film, which stars comedy legends Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, and Harold Ramis as parapsychologists who end up saving the world from, you guessed it — ghosts. And BREAKING NEWS: They're making a new one! Appropriate for kids 10 and up.

5. Harry Potter series (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011)
We can't imagine there's anyone out there who hasn't already seen this series? But they're always worth a repeat viewing. You might want to set aside a week to finish up all eight of these films. Dark and spectacular, each one tops the other in special effects and dramatic storylines. Appropriate for kids 10 and up.
